ChatGPT Images 2.6: GIFs, Flare, and Sunburst land

What OpenAI shipped on November 4, 2026

OpenAI published Introducing Images 2.6 ↗ on November 4, 2026, and mirrored the consumer notes in the ChatGPT release notes ↗. The short version:

  • Faster stills. OpenAI says Images 2.6 generates images 50% faster than before.

  • GIFs in ChatGPT. Ask for a looping animation, or upload a still / sketch and ask ChatGPT to animate it. You can adjust playback speed, save, and share. ChatGPT cannot edit an animated GIF you upload.

  • Saved reference images. Reuse a photo across later chats (for example, save a pet photo and call it by name).

  • API models. GPT‑Image‑2.6 Flare (speed / layout) and GPT‑Image‑2.6 Sunburst (higher detail and edit consistency). Flare can generate in as little as six seconds at low quality, per OpenAI. SVG export and image markup land in the API.

OpenAI also claims people now create 4 billion images per week across ChatGPT, Codex, and the API — more than half a billion per day on average. That figure is OpenAI’s; we are not independently verifying it.

The Images 2.6 system card ↗ adds GIF-specific safeguards because motion can create policy violations that a single still would not. OpenAI is clear that motion-related violations remain hard to catch perfectly.

Availability and pricing shape

Per the launch post and Help Center:

  • Images 2.6 is available globally in ChatGPT and Codex across subscription tiers (desktop, mobile, web).

  • GIF creation is rolling out in ChatGPT (not every account will see it on day one).

  • Flare and Sunburst are in the Images API; see OpenAI’s pricing page for current rates (they change — check the live table before you budget).

Early partners quoted by OpenAI include OpenArt’s Coco Mao on GIFs as “the native language of social media,” and Figma Weave’s Itay Schiff on preserving character/product/brand detail across edits. Those are vendor-selected quotes, not a market survey.

How this lands for creators vs API teams

Creators / marketers in ChatGPT: GIFs plus saved references are the practical unlock. Mascots, reaction loops, and quick storyboards no longer need a separate animation tool for the first draft. Treat outputs as drafts: OpenAI’s own card flags residual GIF safety gaps.

API / product teams: Flare vs Sunburst is the real decision. Flare for posters and fast iteration; Sunburst when edit consistency across rounds matters more than latency. Markup-guided edits reduce the “regenerate the whole scene” tax.

Compared with prior ChatGPT Images: this is an iteration release (speed + motion + API control), not a brand-new generator. If you already have a workflow on 2.5, plan a side-by-side on your hardest edit chains before switching production prompts.

Community note

X full-archive search was returning HTTP 503 during this catch-up window, so we are not inventing viral tweet quotes. We will refresh with attributed X reactions on the next desk pass. Until then, the primary sources above (OpenAI blog, Help Center, system card) are the ground truth.

What we would test before switching production prompts

If you already ship on Images 2.5, run a small bake-off before you rewrite every prompt:

  1. Identity lock. Same character, three edit rounds (background, outfit, pose). Score whether Sunburst keeps the face and wardrobe better than Flare.

  2. Text-in-image. Poster with a short headline. Flare’s layout claim matters here; measure illegible glyphs.

  3. GIF brief. One looping mascot and one “animate this still” path. Check whether the sixth frame loops cleanly and whether the safety layer blocks legitimate motion.

  4. Reference reuse. Save one product photo, call it by name in a new chat, and confirm the model does not invent a different SKU.

Log the four runs. If Flare wins on latency and Sunburst wins on consistency, keep both in the API router instead of forcing a single model ID.

AdSense-safe note: we are not recommending any paid OpenAI plan upsell here — only documenting what shipped and how to evaluate it against work you already do.
